Banner Ads
Hi gang,
I'm sure you've all noticed the new advertisement banner at the top of the forum. Forumotion (the host provider) has decided to make the banner adds visible for all members. Previously, I was able to set the system so that the ads were visible to guests only, but I no longer have control over who sees the banner ads.
As far as I can ascertain, the ads are now a permanent feature, and I am no longer able to remove them.
I'm rather perturbed by this sudden change in policy, but unfortunately there isn't much I can do about it.
I understand that it costs money to maintain the servers, technicians, etc., and the money has to come from somewhere, but I would have appreciated some prior warning. Forumotion is getting quite a bit of flack from angry forum owners, and they've promised us that they're "thinking of some solutions that would please all," so we'll see what they come up with.
In the mean time...
My main concern is that the annoying banner ads don't end up spoiling our enjoyment of the forum.

Re: Banner Ads
To be honest, I wouldn't have really noticed them if you hadn't pointed them out. My eyes just skimmed right over them; I don't pay that much attention.
Speaking for myself -- "and I am unanimous in that"
-- they don't bother me.

Re: Banner Ads
At least they're generally topical since they seem to be Google's "smart ads". I'm used to seeing them in my email, so they don't bother me either.

I had logged out and back in; and see that the banner ads are gone.
Maybe the complaints were quite vocal?

Re: Banner Ads
Yes, I just signed back in, and noticed that the ads are gone. I hope they stay gone!
Just in case they to make a reappearance, I'm glad to know that they don't annoy everybody the way they annoy me. I'm not sure why, but they really set my teeth on edge. On the positive side, they are smart ads-- as Analae pointed out-- and they do sort of blend in with the colors of the forum.
Yep, there was were a lot of grievances aired on the forumotion host forum, so it could be why the ads were removed. The forum is free, and I'm not in a position to purchase my own domain at this time, so I really shouldn't complain.
In the mean time, I'll be thankful that the ads are gone for now.

Re: Banner Ads
I'm with you Kaph, I had noticed them and found them annoying and distracting-- really glad that they've removed them now; but like you said it's free.
Re: Banner Ads
I guess they didn't bother me either, since I didn't even notice them
I tend to see what I want, and don't see what I don't want, I guess.

I'm usually that way too! but I did notice the banners
Re: Banner Ads
I tune ads out, too. As long as there's not a bunch of annoying pop ups, I'm happy.
Well, the ads are here anyway, so you might as well put up some aff links, Kaph! A little extra money never hurt people like us.
