Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
Anybody use the Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards?
If so, do you use the book Fortune Telling with Gypsy Cards by Esther Gombor?
I wondered if the book was any good since it would be applicable to other sibilla-type decks such as the Art Deco Fortune Telling Cards.
I don't own the cards or the book. The cards are relatively inexpensive. It's a shame that the book is so pricey, although I understand that it's beautifully put together.

Hi Kapherus,
I've got this Hungarian deck or I should say the Zigeuner Wahrsage Karten and I must admit they are quite difficult to read, probably because there are only 36 cards. It's true that you can follow some Lenormand spreads using the whole deck and deciding some thematic cards like Love, Money, Officer for job (according to the little book I have) etc....but you don't have cards like Nemica, Gran signore etc.., I mean some people representing cards are missing here making the reading quite complicated!
Thanks for the link anyway!

Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
Thanks, Wildcat!
I find the Art Deco Fortune Telling deck equally difficult to interpret even though it consists of 52 cards. I wondered if there was some secret in Esther Gombor's book that would make these decks more accessible in the way that the Treppner Course makes the Lenormand so much more accessible (at least to me).

Sorry, I don't know Esther Gombor's book but it would be nice if there was a secret method to learn how to interpret these cards, may be according to combos! I suppose combos could be of great help here!!

Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
I remember my blog friend Sammie, really loving her book. I haven't seen her post in awhile though to ask her.
It's a book that I've wanted to get for awhile too...but price kept me from jumping until later-
I play with the Zigeuner WahrsageKarten sometimes, and do get meaningful readings...but I definitely prefer the Lenormand,Kipper & Sibilla.
In some ways, I think it's because I'm more drawn to the artwork on the latter 3
oh well! lol
The book is on my "list"- (I have an immediate & growing list as soon as some funds are transferred into my account! lol) watch out postman!

Hi Spirity,
Thanks! I think I stumbled on your friend Sammie's site when I googled Esther Gombor. Your friend did a nice job of presenting the book, and Esther left a nice comment on her blog.
Esther Gombor has a blog of her own (Gypsy Cafe) where she discussing some of the individual cards, and her take is very different from the meanings I've seen elsewhere such as on Madam Seaqueen's blog.
I'm intrigued!!
I've decided that I MUST have the book, but it will be a while before I can warrant spending that much money on a book.

It's too bad that it's not already in digital format-
we could have had a group "club" buy for those interested, making it more affordable

Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
Agreed - that's almost as much as I paid for the translation of Johannes Schoener's first volume on nativities. When a single book is in the $50 range, I get Very Nervous. Even the $35 range, and there are two I need - not this month - that'll run that. This divination stuff is getting pricey, even if you don't overindulge in decks!
I wish there was a bit more in her blog posts, but I'm getting the feeling that it's a lot like reading the Kipper if you have an older deck, or definitely the sibilla. Kaph, you're our resident genius on that one, maybe you could help us transfer some meanings?

Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
I've had the Zigeuner and the 32-card Biedermeier deck that it was derived from for some years now. I actually prefer using the Biedermeier even though it has four less cards. I enjoy the kitschy-cheap fifties pulp comic style of the Zigeuner, but I prefer the 19th century Biedermeier art (which is also hilarious - the man on "Merriment" is groping the woman, the dog on "Fidelity" appears to have polio, maybe that's the real reason he's not leaving...) I've practiced them at several defunct forums and I read them sometimes, but they're not my heavy rotation decks. I wouldn't mind picking up some new insights on them, though.
I never heard of Esther Gombor until now. I had a look at her site and her blog. This is typical:
Lots of sermonizing and no real information.

me feel fortunate and powerful?Apart from
its many layers of meanings, Fortune also talks about being in control
of creating a situation that is to our advantage. In other words, we
control how we react to the opportunities that are offered to us. We
have to grab Fortune's feet when she is walking right above us; if we
hesitate and decide not to act, she will walk past us, leaving us empty
handed.
Deep down I know that I should be
more open to the opportunities that are offered to me. But, instead of
doing that, I tend to focus on the routine which, although, gets things
done, does not leave much room for development in my business...

Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
I'm gonna wait til your and Kaph's fortune telling books come out (hint hint)!
From your excerpt, it sounds like she's reading in Jungian, not from a gypsy tradition.

Go to her site and click on "THE AUTHOR" and tell me that this woman is capable of reading Jung.Chanah wrote:

It takes peace and quiet to write. I intend to write a ton of stuff when I am retired and don't have people paging me every time I go to the bathroom.
Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
Why must everyone be Sylvie?
And you're correct, it's about as Rom as a Happy Meal. So that's one lie already.
Re: Hungarian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards (Zigeuner Wahrsagekarten)
I dunno-- I'm still intrigued by what she has to say about the Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards. She doesn't claim to be Rom herself-- apparently these cards are very popular in Hungary where she was born.
She does claims to have gotten her information from old Hungarian texts dealing with the Gypsy cards, and from interviews with modern Hungarian readers whose knowledge of the cards was passed down through their families.
I don't doubt that the book isn't worth the exorbitant asking price, but I'm sucker for any kind of folklore I can find about cartomancy.
Interesting that the Gypsy Cards were derived from the Biedermeier. Does anyone know which 4 cards were added to the Gypsy Cards? I'm curious because the Art Deco Fortune Telling deck appears to be based on the Biedermeier as well, but with 16 additional cards.

Lay off Sylvie already Fenn!
We get it, you don't think much of her...
but some of us do appreciate what she's written and shared, and some of us have taken the time to get to know her and like her!
I like you too- but I get tired of all the criticism & digs-
can we stick to sharing about cards, rather than talking about criticisms of personalities??
This wonderful forum doesn't need it!
