The 2009 Playing Card Design Project
THE ART OF CARTOMANCY FORUM IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE…
On your marks... Get your crayons ready... Because we're designing a playing card deck!
We are absolutely stoked about this idea and we hope that you are too. Here are the details:
WHAT An eclectic custom deck designed by members of the forum, which we will then have printed and made available to you!
WHO Everybody! First things first: We need to know who's interested in our lovely custom deck. We also need to know who might be interested in purchasing a copy of the finished product! THEN we need to know who's interested in designing a card. This will require commitment to a deadline and a great big dose of creativity!
WHEN Signups by 11:59 p.m., July 11, 2009
Card assignments by July 15, 2009
Artwork submission by August 30, 2009
Orders by September 30, 2009
Tentative submission date to printer: October 10, 2009
Tentative shipping date: November 1, 2009
ARTWORK We’ll begin with the Court cards and Aces (we might be able to do more, depending on the turnout). Cards will be assigned, but artwork will be completely at the artist’s discretion. Medium, theme, traditional, collage, abstract, electronic or mixed-media, you name it - it’s all you. Artwork will remain your copyright and be used with permission. Artwork must be submitted to Analae by email (analae@gmail.com) on or before August 30, 2009. Electronic images must be at least 300dpi. Those without access to a scanner should contact Analae by email or PM to make other arrangements. We’ll post it to the forum as it comes in. And please sign your artwork!
HOW MUCH? This is a not-for-profit project. The number of orders will directly impact the cost of each deck. Anyone may order a copy of the finished deck. We expect that each deck will have an end cost of somewhere between $15-20 (US) plus postage. Orders will need to be placed and payment received before the deck is sent out for printing so that everyone who wants one is guaranteed to get it.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE CARD BACKS? (or, AND AS IF THAT WASN’T ENOUGH, HOW ABOUT A CONTEST?)
This is how it works: Any member of the forum may submit a design for the official card back. Yep, we did say anyone. Whether you’re a designated artist or not! Entries must be received by August 30, 2009. All received entries for the card back will be posted to the forum on September 1, 2009, and voting will remain open for two weeks in order for us all to choose the winning design. All members may cast one vote each, and any tie between designs will result in a showdown rematch. The winning design will be submitted to the printer as the official issue card back. The sky’s the limit!
How exciting is this? More details will follow!

Re: The 2009 Playing Card Design Project
Well gang, theoretically we were all supposed to have our designs in by August 30th. Let's sound off and see who thinks they can make this happen, and if it isn't, let's rethink our timeline...
Personally I will try and meet the August 30 deadline but it might be a bit of a struggle for me, and obviously our Kaph might be unable to meet the date, so I'd like to know where you all stand (aside from those who have sent me both their cards, whom I am in awe of!)

Re: The 2009 Playing Card Design Project
I'm still planning to make it for Aug 30.
Maybe we could add another week or two? If you're going to have to struggle, and Kaph is AWOL, I don't think it would hurt.
Is there a print-related deadline?
Thanks for asking.

Hi Rif, thanks for piping up. The proposed timelines are ours; we have not committed to a print deadline (forethought? lol) yet so we are safe there.

Excellent.
My K♥ is well under way but I'm waffling about what I want to do with the Q♠... I'll try and get them finished by this weekend! I'm looking forward to seeing what you all have come up with

Re: The 2009 Playing Card Design Project
Is the card design project a dead duck? Has everyone lost interest?
This deck could be truly amazing with all the individual ideas out there.
Are there any more cards waiting in the wings?............. Of course I could just be overly impatient!!

Re: The 2009 Playing Card Design Project
I think we'll get it done, Sally, but perhaps the summer was a bit more demanding for all of us than we anticipated! (I know it was for me, and it hasn't stopped yet!)
When I have a chance I'll try to come up with a new timeline and rally the gang again
